Finstad Statement on Continuing Resolution Vote
September 30, 2023
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Brad Finstad (MN-01) released a statement following today’s passage of H.R. 5860, the Continuing Appropriations Act, legislation that would extend government funding for an additional 45 days:
“This week, my House colleagues and I have worked around the clock to make sure Congress fulfills its obligation to fund government services. With federal spending at an all-time high and our national deficit at nearly $33 trillion, it is clear that we cannot afford to continue Washington's pattern of reckless spending that will leave our children and grandchildren bankrupt,” said Rep. Finstad.
“Friday, House Republicans put forward the Spending Reduction and Border Security Act, a stopgap funding bill that would have kept the government open, cut wasteful spending, and put policies in place to secure our out-of-control southern border. Unfortunately, a small group of Republicans joined all Democrats to kill the bill on the floor.
“While I would have preferred the solution that achieved these conservative goals, a yes vote on today’s resolution was the best option for avoiding a costly government shutdown and prevented a forced vote on a bad bill with new funding to Ukraine from the Democrat-led Senate.
“My constituents sent me to Washington to govern, and I am committed to making sure our government remains open, operating, and responsive to taxpayers. I supported today’s short-term resolution which will keep the government functioning, allow both chambers of Congress to continue to work through the appropriations process, and get us back to regular order on the right track to restoring fiscal sanity in our country.”
