Finstad Introduces Legislation to Designate Austin Post Office as the “John Madden Memorial Post Office”

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Brad Finstad (MN-01) announced the introduction of legislation designating the post office located at 200 1st Avenue SE in Austin, Minnesota, as the “John Madden Memorial Post Office.” John Madden, born in Austin in 1936, was a Super Bowl-winning, nationally renowned head coach in the National Football League (NFL). After his historic career in the NFL, Madden went on to become a commentator, with his sportscasting career spanning from 1979 to 2009, covering 11 total Super Bowls and winning 16 Sports Emmy Awards. To this day, he is still considered one of the greatest coaches and broadcasters in NFL history.

“It is an honor to introduce legislation that memorializes the football legend, John Madden, in his birthplace of Austin, Minnesota,” said Rep. Finstad. “Madden had a one-of-a-kind career and Minnesota’s First District is lucky to be a part of it. I look forward to keeping his legacy alive for years to come.”

In a statement on behalf of the Madden family, John Madden’s son, Mike, expressed support for the legislation, saying, “On behalf of my mom and the rest of our family, I’d like to thank Congressman Finstad and everyone else involved in the proposed renaming of the post office in Austin, MN after my dad, John Madden. We lost our dad four and a half years ago, so to know that he will be honored and remembered in his birthplace makes us all happy. The family and I agree that this is a wonderful gesture, and are very appreciative to everyone who has contributed in preserving his legacy.”
